Free-estimates

Q.  Do you provide free estimates?
A.  Yes, we provide free, no obligation estimates.

Q. Why does my roof leak?
A.  Shingle roofs are designed to shed water, not hold water.  Whenever waterflow off the roof is obstructed, water will flow under shingles and over flashings (the joints where the roof meets vertical walls) to create leaks.

Q. Why do some roofs have problems and others don't?
A.  Heat loss through the roof is the biggest variable.  Some houses have extremely effective insulation and ventilation.  Other house, due to their design, are more difficult to insulate and ventilate.  The complexity of the roof geometry is another variable.  Unheated unattached garages typically never have ice backup problems because there is no heat escaping to melt the snow and the roof geometry is usually pretty simple.

Q.    Can I install new shingles overtop of the old shingles?
A.    It is possible, but we recommend removal of the existing shingles to ensure the shingles perform to the manufacturer's specifications and to keep your manufacturer's warranty intact.  Installing new shingles over the existing can trap moisture from the old shingles and cause premature deterioration of the new shingles.

Q.    Why is ventilation so important?
A.    To prevent moisture condensation during the wet winter months and to cool your attic space in the summer.  It may also be a requirement of the shingle manufacturer.

Q.    Is it possible to install new shingles in the winter?
A.    Yes we can and do and we guarantee you a "leak free" installation.

Q.    I have just had new asphalt shingles installed.   Why are the granules coming off?
A.    This is very common with new shingles.  When manufactured an excess amount of granules is applied and these wash off. This will stop after the first few rainfalls.

Q.    How long will it take to roof my house?
A.    It takes approximately 2 - 3 days to roof the average house.

Q.    I have moss on my roof, is there anything I can do?
A.    If the moss build-up is slight, you can leave it. If it is severe, you can apply a solution of zinc sulphate mixed with hot water. Do not pressure wash the roof.

At Gary Chandler Contracting, as well as installing your new roof , we want to make sure your roof lasts for years to come.  Follow these tips to achieve optimum performance from your roofing system.

  • Ensure the gutters are kept clear of any debris to allow water to flow freely
  • Minimize the traffic on the roof.  This could cause premature breakdown of the shingles.
